![]() Some people just aren't wired for old school gaming, apparently. Once again I say "screw you Angry Nintendo Nerd" with this one. Many gamers wanted a port of Konami's arcade beat-'em-up of the same name instead, but had to wait until 1991, when a port of the arcade classic came to the NES under the TMNT 2 moniker. Unfortunately, this game didn't satisfy everyone. It also had multiple fields-of-view, from top-down navigation to side-scrolling sequences, the perspectives were mixed up considerably at a time when games were usually from one outlook only. The great thing about TMNT was its ability to let gamers use all four Ninja Turtles at will, even though it was only a one-player action game. Developed by Konami and published by its subsidiary Ultra (a ghost publisher created only so that Konami could publish more games per year than Nintendo allowed), TMNT proved to be a fun, challenging game with crisp graphics and compelling gameplay. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before a videogame followed the television show and toys. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a smash phenomenon in the late 1980s. The day this one was conquered was when I finally found Game Genie codes, booted up two players and made sure either my brother or I stayed alive to keep the progress on our assault. Two guys with a knife and a suicide complex decide to invade Russia. This is the original co-op Splinter Cell (minus the stealth part). Your standard melee attack was a stabbing knife, with distance-attacking firearms available later on, but no matter what your armament, you had to be precise with your placement or cheap death was inevitable. Instead, it was a lot easier to take your time and advance through each level slowly, as waves of soldiers spawned from all direction to charge you and kill you dead. Rush 'n Attack is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up/shooter that didn't reward new players for attempting its titular strategy. You've got to remember the historical time period that the NES was released – it was an age when the Cold War was still a very prominent problem in many American's minds, and game companies certainly didn't shy away from the free advertising that the fear-inspiring nightly news and morning papers were instilling in the purchasing public. ![]() It doesn't take a master of Mad Gab to discern the phonetically equivalent true title Konami was going for with this one, especially after you realize that the setting is a Soviet stronghold and all of the enemies are Communists. Do you need anything else? It's no Blades of Steel (hell EA's NHL09 isn't Blades of Steel), but growing up in Minnesota and playing on a hockey team ensured that this one was in the NES as much as Super Mario 3. ![]() I think I've got the same fond memory for this one as everyone else does: skinny dude, medium dude, and fat dude. The only game that ended up rivaling this excellent design was Konami's Blades of Steel, but the two were different enough to own and enjoy both (which is why you'll find Blades on this countdown). Every Ice Hockey player discovered their own perfect combination of men, and then it was on to the ice. You could choose from three different player body types, and outfit your team with any combination of them fast but weak Skinny Guys, brawny but slow Fat Guys, or well-balanced, middle-ground Normal Guys. This game of skating and slap shots was perfectly balanced, simple fun with just the right touch of planning and strategy to keep things interesting match after match. None of those games ended up having the lasting appeal and addictiveness of one of its other contemporaries, though – the first-party Nintendo sports sim known simply as Ice Hockey. Nintendo had a fairly diverse lineup of sports titles introduced for the NES early on in the system's life cycle, including 8-bit interpretations of soccer, tennis, volleyball and even downhill slalom skiing. In fact, during the sixteen years following the battle, the Austrian Habsburgs gradually recovered and dominated south- ern Hungary and Transylvania, which had been largely cleared of Turkish forces. Historians suggest the battle marked the turning-point in the Ottoman–Habsburg wars, a 300-year struggle be- tween the Holy Roman and Ottoman Empires. The decisive battle took place on 11 September, after the united relief army of about 46,000 men had arrived. The Turkish forces consisted of 60 ortas of Janissaries (12,000 men paper-strength) with an observation army of c.70,000 men watching the countryside. An Ottoman army of approximately 90,000 – 300,000 men began the siege on 14 July 1683. The opposing military forces were those of Ottoman Empire and those of Ottoman fiefdoms commanded by Grand Vizier Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha. The overall command was held by the senior leader, the King of Poland, John III Sobieski, who led the Polish forces. (The march of the Lithuanian army was delayed, and they reached Vienna after it had been relieved.) The Viennese garrison was led by Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg, an Austrian subject of Holy Roman Em- peror Leopold I. The battle was won by the combined forces of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and the Polish– Lithuanian Commonwealth, the latter represented only by the forces of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. ![]() ![]() In the ensuing war that lasted until 1698, the Turks lost almost all of Hun- gary to the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. ![]() Superb arrangements throughout.Ī reworking of the song that was included on Dave’s previous album CALL. If people can find time to listen to Dave’s lyrics it will give a lot of food for thought. The message, as on all tracks is an equally compelling one. A nice and easy intro flows smoothly into Dave’s vocals. Dave’s vocals have never sounded better than on this track. Very commercial sounding track with many shades and aspects of an ‘Earthrise’ song. ![]() On a personal level, I consider this is the best track from a purely listening point of view. Powerful and compelling.Įlephants stampeding on the intro! Followed by upbeat drum sound, leading into a much slower and easy going tune where Dave’s voice sounds at times Lennon’ish and washes beautifully over you before grabbing you and not letting your emotions loose. The chorus line “Lord you are my everything, everything I need, you gave me a song to sing and a love for all eternity”. “The lord is greater that anything” which is a strong message. An uptempo and endearing track with an optimistic message, and a bouncy feelgood factor for everyone. The first few chords have shades of ‘Ballroom Dancing’ by Paul McCartney, but quickly fades away. Music and lyrics gel in a perfect harmony, the message once more builds into an overwhelming Christian anthem which is difficult to ignore. One of the best tracks on the album, and another track which is beautiful in it’s simplicity (not easy to achieve). ![]() Some of the lyrics are so compelling “If you call on Him just admit the state you are in, the promise is clear, it’s written in here, he wants you to know he will never let go.” ![]() Notwithstanding the title, Dave’s voice occasionally sounds like Del Shannon here at times. Leads into some great harmonies between the two which are very Beatle’ish at times whilst still portraying the Christian message. “God is in his heaven, you are on the earth”. Mandy joins forces with Dave on this track. Would be great to hear this tune on a film sound track. With a few plays you simply can’t get the tune out of your head. This instrumental is enchantingly very simple, and is no less effective for that. I know you can hear me where I am”.Ī nice and easy piano intro merges into an orchestral keyboard, which sounds like a Mark Knopler song waiting for the great man’s guitar to break through. The message from the song is simple “When You Hear Me Call, won’t you smile on me once more. Starting with a beautiful lush lyric followed by a beautiful yet simple chord with Dave’s voice marrying things together. This humble and beautiful track is a perfect opening for this fine album and sets the general tone. Dave’s lyrics are an inspiration for us all, and if only we could all take time out to listen to the message conveyed here, maybe the world would be a more tolerant and peaceful planet. LONG WAY HOME is a Christian album, and whilst this type of music may not be everyone’s cup of tea, make no mistake, this album is jam packed with superb songs which are finely crafted by this underrated songsmith. Those fans who have been eagerly awaiting Dave’s new release, which follows the excellent CALL album in 1997 will not be disappointed.
